Feeling Off? You Might Be Ignoring Your Values
Most people never sit down and ask themselves what actually matters. Not really.
They push through their day, tick boxes, say yes when they mean no—and then wonder why they feel off.
If that sounds like you, it might be time to identify your values. Not the Insta-worthy kind. The real ones. The ones that keep you steady when life gets messy.
Start Here: Look at Who You Admire
If you’re not sure what your values are, start by looking outwards:
-
Who do you admire?
-
What traits do they live by?
-
What do they consistently not do?
Then flip it:
-
What behaviours make you cringe?
-
What attitudes rub you the wrong way—even if it’s your own?
Those gut reactions? They’re clues. They tell you what you stand for (and what you won’t stand for anymore).
Try This: Write Your Own Eulogy
Sounds grim, but hear me out.
Imagine someone giving a speech about your life. What do you want them to say? What would make you proud? What would make you squirm?
This exercise is a values detector. It highlights where your actions match your ideals—and where they don’t. Use it. Don’t judge it.
What Would the Kids Say?
Or your partner. Or your team. Even your dog, if they could talk.
Imagine what those closest to you would say if they were being kind, but honest. If what you imagine doesn’t sit right, that’s not shame—it’s a prompt.
It’s a chance to realign.
Now Check Your List
Once you’ve jotted down some values, check for gaps.
-
Anything missing?
-
Any values that feel borrowed, not real?
-
Which ones do you say you care about, but rarely act on?
Next, rate yourself from 1 to 10 for each value. Not in theory—in action. This isn’t a scorecard. It’s a snapshot of where you’re living in line—and where you’re not.
Why This Exercise Works
When you know your values, you:
-
Stop saying yes to things that drain you
-
Catch your kneejerk reactions before they cost you
-
Make clearer, faster decisions
-
Feel more grounded—even in chaos
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being deliberate.
Your Next Step
Pick one of the exercises and actually do it. No need to overthink. Just start.
